After a two year journey, Maryland finally passed the Clean Energy Jobs Act last night on the final day of the 2019 session. The bill which mandates 50 % renewable energy by 2030 in Maryland was supported by many environmental groups in the state, including a group of MIT alumni who wrote a letter to urge immediate and strong action. The MIT alumni's letter was signed by over 100 and published in the state's largest newspaper, the Baltimore Sun, last October. Several dozen lawmakers wrote supporting statements, including both US Senators, most of the US Congressmen, Maryland State Senator Brian Feldman, the bill sponsor, and other state legislators. For the full story on yesterday's passage of the legislation, see article in today's Baltimore Sun.
