Climate change is fueling a wave of extremel weather conditions and a long-term drought in the Great Southern plains, according to Mike Schulte, Chairman of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission.
Unfortunately, these conditions are worsening as a result of US farming policy. The 2014 Farming Bill rewards farmers for continuing to plant crops of dust-blown soil, hampering the ability of the soil to recover.
